When I first held a varsity jacket as a teenager, it felt heavy—not just in weight, but in meaning. You didn’t just buy one. You didn’t just wear it to fit in. You got one because you stood out—for showing up, working hard, staying late, or leading by example.
That stayed with me. And years later, it became the foundation for Jacket Authority.
Where It All Started
The first varsity jacket wasn’t really a jacket.
Back in 1865, the Harvard baseball team gave their top players thick wool sweaters with a giant “H” stitched on the front. But it wasn’t a handout. You had to earn it, season after season. If your performance dropped, the sweater—and the honor—was taken back.
That’s how serious it was.
The letter stood for more than just a school name.
It stood for dedication, commitment, pride.
That’s where it began. And over time, the sweater evolved into the iconic varsity jacket—complete with wool body, leather sleeves, striped collar, and of course, that all-important letter over the heart.
More Than a Team Uniform
Yes, varsity jackets started in athletics—but they didn’t stay there.
Soon, schools began awarding them to band members, student leaders, honor society students, and anyone who made a lasting impact. It wasn’t about being the fastest or the strongest. It was about being consistent. Dedicated. Respected.
You could see a person’s journey just by looking at their jacket—the patches, the pins, the years they served, the name stitched on the sleeve. It was a walking timeline of their effort.
Even now, decades later, I still believe there’s no piece of clothing more meaningful.
